Abstract

Introduction: Aging, disease and injury can be thought of as the result of cells that are damaged or in a malfunctioning state. Regenerative medicine's premise is to restore tissue homeostasis by promoting repair or replacing damaged cells, tissues or organs, involving the linking and combination of different disciplines, including engineering, technology, medicine and biology.
Objective: To describe the composition and products derived from bone marrow; use, and application in regenerative medicine, and list the ways to obtain the derivatives; mention the types of procedures that are performed and describe the main indications.
Methodology: Literature review through research carried out in the LILACS and PUBMED databases from 2007 to 2022, searching to verify the effectiveness of regenerative medicine procedures described in published scientific articles using stem cells extracted from bone marrow, seeking to understand the pathophysiology of mechanisms involved. Studies reporting research on animals and stem cells from adipose tissue were excluded.
Conclusion: Most studies show that bone marrow-derived products are effective and capable of changing the course of the disease, provided that intervention is performed early. Furthermore, there are numerous researches in the field of regenerative medicine using adjuvant methods in association with genetic engineering in the development of biomaterials and orthobiologicals, and the expansion of stem cells in the laboratory. Some researchers question the financial cost of the method; therefore, they fear the difficulty of access by the majority of the population.
