Metabolic syndrome in military police from the Goiás state

Objective: Establish the prevalence of metabolic syndrome (MS) in military police in the Goias State, and verify if there is a difference between male and female military police officers from Goias.
Methodology: Cross-sectional study using a survey of the military police physical condition, in the Health Center database, related to the years: 2009 a 2013. These subjects were diagnosed with a MS, by means of NCEP with modifications.
Results: 6303 military polices were evaluated, 52.5% of the population, which 94.5% men and 5.5% women. Most of the subjects were over 35 years old (76.8%), married (66.9%), graduated as sergeant (38.5%) and with a high school degree (41.0%), ranked as overweight (49.4%). The most commons components to the SM was High Blood Pressure (58.9%), High Triglycerides (42.8%), HDL (30.3%), Abdominal Circumference (17.4%) and Glucose (17.4%). From the total, 23.7% subjects (n = 1495) were diagnosed with SM, whose 23.9% are men e 20.7% are woman (p = 0.172).
Conclusion: The prevalence of MS in military police of the State of Goias was 23.7%, having a significant statistic difference between men (23.9%) and women (20.7%).
