Abstract

Objective: to describe the prevalence and epidemiological profile of patients undergoing evisceration and enucleation at the Hospital Fundação Banco de Olhos de Goiás, a reference in ophthalmology in the Unified Health System for the Brazilian Midwest. Methods: retrospective and descriptive observational study conducted from medical records of patients seen between January 2013 and December 2018. The variables studied were: type of surgery, sex, age, surgical indication, and the number of surgeries per year. Results: 227 medical records were analyzed, of which 181 (79.74%) were from patients undergoing evisceration and 46 (20.26%) from enucleation. Of the entire population, 71.81% (163) were male and 28.19% (64) female, with the average of 57 years old, being higher in the enucleation group. Both procedures studied had trauma as the main indication (63.00%), followed by endophthalmitis (14.54%), painful blind eye (11.89%), phthisis bulbi (9.25%), and, finally, malignant neoplasms (1.32%). From the years evaluated, there was a substantial increase in the number of eviscerations performed and a small variation in the number of enucleations. Conclusion: The need to wear goggles and other safety measures at work, the diagnosis and early treatment of endophthalmitis, glaucoma, and malignant neoplasias are reinforced in order to reduce the evisceration/enucleation statistics and their respective impacts.
