Epidemiological profile of military police officers deemed unfit to take the physical evaluation test

Abstract

OBJECTIVE: To characterize the clinical and laboratory profile of miltary police officers rated unfit on the Physical Assessment Test (PAT).
METHODS: A retrospective, cross-sectional descriptive survey of data on 388 unfit military police officers from the Military Police Integral Health Center database covering the period from February 2, 2009 to April 30, 2010.
RESULTS: 69.3% of unfit military police offers were men, ranging in age from 25 to 60 years. The largest percentage (79.1%) were in the 35 to 55 year age bracket. 42.0% of subjects had normal weight and 28.61% were pre-obese. The lipid profile showed that 44.0%, 52.1%, 34.3% and 49.2% of unfit police officers showed alterations in total cholesterol, HDL, LDL and triglycerides, respectively. Similarly, abnormal results were found for 4.9%, 29.6%, 34.5% and 4.6% of the sample for complete blood count, glucose, creatinine and PSA, respectively.
CONCLUSION: Of the military police officers rated as unfit on the PAT, 57.9% were overweight, 40.46% were hypertensive and 44.0%, 52.1%, 34.3%, 49 2%, 29.6% and 34.5% registered total cholesterol, HDL, LDL, triglycerides, glucose and creatinine levels above the reference values.
