Abstract

Immune Thrombocytopenic Purpura is a blood disorder that causes reduced survival and decreased platelet production and is treated with corticosteroids as the first option. Glucocorticoids have complex effects on bone metabolism, reducing bone matrix formation and contributing to the development of osteoporosis. Bisphosphonates, such as pamidronate, are used in the treatment of osteoporosis and other bone conditions, demonstrating efficacy in inhibiting bone resorption. The objective is to investigate the effects of corticosteroid-induced osteoporosis in a case study, evaluating bone mineral density, risk factors and possible prevention and treatment measures. This case report describes a 78-year-old woman with secondary osteoporosis caused by prolonged use of corticosteroids to treat idiopathic thrombocytopenic purpura. Corticosteroids are effective in treating purpura but can lead to osteoporosis due to negative effects on bone metabolism. The patient received treatment with bisphosphonate, which is effective in reducing the risk of fractures. Bone densitometry showed an improvement in bone density after treatment, although osteopenia was still present. The report highlights the importance of adequate monitoring and treatment of osteoporosis in patients receiving corticosteroids, with the use of bisphosphonates playing a crucial role in the prevention and treatment of the disease
