Abstract

Objectives: To evaluate the pharmacotherapy adhesion level of the elderly population attended by the geriatrics department of the Geriatric Hospital from Anápolis – GO. Besides, it has the objective of defining the main medications and diseases groups related to the extreme pharmacotherapy adhesion level.
Methods: It is a transversal and descriptive study with a quali-quantitative approach, done during the months of October to December of 2015. 155 patients were analyzed in this period. It was applied an interview based on a questionnaire about the presence or not of the adhesion to the medications by the elderly and their determinants.
Results: The results of this study showed a high rate of patients who declared themselves with extreme adhesion level to the medication prescribed (51%). However, about 52% (82) claim already have had adverse reactions to the medication prescribed and 78 (50%) referred self-medication. The main group of diseases claimed by the elderly was the cardiovascular system, followed by the musculoskeletal system.
Conclusion: The present study concluded that approximately half of the population analyzed (51%) declared that had extreme adhesion to the pharmacotherapy prescribed. The study also concluded that the main disease group referred by the population were the cardiovascular system diseases and the musculoskeletal system diseases. The evaluation of the elderly population about the use of medication, the presence or not of medical monitoring and the self-medication. is of extreme importance, since this is a vulnerable population and is often in use of multiple medications.
