Objectives: To evaluate the evolution of cesarean indexes in a public maternity hospital. Methods: This is an original, descriptive and retrospective study that analyzed the data related to the births that took place in a municipal hospital of Goiânia - GO in the years of 2012 to 2016. The data were made available by the Technical Board of Maternity and separated in Normal deliveries and cesarean deliveries from 2012 to April 2016. Results: Data from the year 2012 to 2016 show that there is predominance of normal delivery in relation to cesarean delivery, and that the goals of the Ministry of Health are being fulfilled. From its re-inauguration in 2012 to October 2016, 16,324 deliveries were performed at the Dona Iris Hospital and Maternity Hospital. Of these 9,981 were normal deliveries, which corresponds to 61.14% and 6,313 were cesarean deliveries, corresponding to 38.67%. Conclusion: Rates of cesarean deliveries decreased from 2012 to October 2016. Rates of cesarean deliveries at Dona Iris Hospital and Maternity are lower than the minimum recommended by the Ministry of Health of 40% of cesarean deliveries at the unit. There is a downward trend in cesarean rates in public maternities due to the improvement in the service provided to parturient.
