Objectives: To describe the profile of the main causes of fetal deaths in a public hospital. Methods: This is a retrospective ecological study. The sample consisted of all those born in the Hospital and Maernity Dona Iris, Goiânia – GO, from June 2014 to June 2018. Results: 188 fetal deaths were found, and obstetricians performed all deliveries. The main maternal characteristics presented were: 44% primigesta, 84% without previous abortions, 84% with membrane integrated, 77% with broken bag, and 84% had no intercurrence during pregnancy. Among those who had complications (16%), the main cause was hypertension. Sixty nine used anesthesia during labor, with spinal anesthesia being the most used (80%). Among the pregnant women, 57% presented risk factors, the main ones being hypertension, syphilis and urinary infection. The main fetal deaths characteristics found were: female fetuses (53%), preterm (79%), normal births (78%), clear amniotic fluid (47%), cephalic presentation (71%), weight less than 2,500 grams (79%), no attempt at resuscitation (95%), death before delivery (84%), fetuses referred for necropsy (84%) and no previous diagnosis (53%)Of the fetuses that presented diagnoses the main ones were: maceration, hydrocephalus and malformations. Conclusion: The fetal mortality rate of the unit is 9.02 per 1000 births, representing 0.9%, as the coefficient of neonatal mortality. Among the pregnant women, those who presented risk factors were: hypertension, syphilis and urinary tract infection. Of the fetuses that presented diagnoses the main ones were: maceration, hydrocephalus and malformations.
