Abstract

OBJECTIVE: To identify the efficacy, safety and complications of vaginal use of meshes in the treatment of the apical defect.
METHODS: We searched the databases BVS/PUBMED for works published in the last five years, from 2007 to 2012. Of the 527 articles retrieved, 11 were selected and a dissertation was included given its relevance to the theme. We excluded studies with evidence level C and D.
RESULTS: The genital dystopia is a common indication for surgery and 30% of women treated with conventional surgery will develop recurrence of symptoms. Studies show that treatment of pelvic reconstructive surgery with the use of vaginal synthetic fabric has high success rates, ranging from 87 to 95%. Complications rates are higher when compared to site-specific treatment; the most frequent are erosion of the meshes.
CONCLUSION: The results suggest that the use of polypropylene mesh carried out with a tension-free technique is a definite option for the repair of pelvic reconstruction.
